Netflix is moving forward with the production of its reality series, Building the Band, despite the recent passing of judge Liam Payne. The project was first announced in August 2024, revealing that Payne would serve as a judge alongside Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls and Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, with AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys as the host.

The series, which was set to be filmed during the summer, features a distinctive format where talented singers will form their own bands without ever meeting face-to-face. They will utilize isolated booths to choose their bandmates based on musical compatibility, connection, chemistry, and talent.

A press release raised the intriguing question, “When the bands finally meet, how will looks, choreography, and style factor in?” It promised a wealth of drama, outstanding artistry, and unforgettable performances.

Following Payne’s tragic death in October 2024, it was confirmed that filming had wrapped up in the U.K. earlier in August, casting doubt on the series’ future. However, Netflix has now announced that it will proceed with the show as planned, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The streaming platform clarified that there was never an intention to cancel the series, although they were concerned about how prominently Payne would be featured after his death. On January 29, Netflix reportedly conducted a “special presentation” in Los Angeles, where Brandon Riegg, Vice President of Nonfiction Series and Sports, mentioned that discussions had occurred with Payne’s family regarding his role in the series.

As of now, no premiere date for the series has been revealed.
