Next Level Chef Season 4: Which home cooks advanced to the draft?

Following the successful securing of spots in the draft by the social media chefs, Next Level Chef Season 4 turned its attention to the home cooks. Their journey is characterized not only by determination but also by a desire to impress. Home cooks consistently face the most stringent critics—namely, their families. Did this tough love translate into commendations from the judges?

Following the successful securing of spots in the draft by the social media chefs, Next Level Chef Season 4 turned its attention to the home cooks. Their journey is characterized not only by determination but also by a desire to impress. Home cooks consistently face the most stringent critics—namely, their families. Did this tough love translate into commendations from the judges?

In the initial challenge, the home cooks were tasked with a familiar scenario: preparing meals using pantry staples. With ingredients ranging from boxed items to canned meats, the phrase “there’s nothing to eat” was rendered obsolete.

The primary insight from this challenge is that the home cooks are well-prepared to compete. Most of the dishes showcased creativity and robust flavors. From corn and crab pasta to clam ramen, the home cooks demonstrated their eagerness to secure a place in the competition.

Regrettably, the two weakest dishes were evident. Roma struggled with focus throughout his cooking process. Despite Nyesha Arrington’s encouragement to aim for a cohesive end product, his plate ended up as a disorganized assortment of ingredients lacking a unifying theme. The excessive pile of black beans was a significant error.

Jimmy’s dish suffered from a lack of balance. Although canned meat offers great potential, its saltiness was overshadowed by the sweetness of corn flake cereal, which was not intended to be a dessert. This misstep was unfortunate.

The first home cook eliminated was Ruma. Due to his lack of direction, the judges found it difficult to envision his potential for improvement.

In the second challenge, conducted in the middle kitchen, the home cooks were required to prepare a dish for a loved one in honor of a special occasion. While the home cooks were not permitted to elaborate on the significance of their creations, it was evident that this group was earnestly competing for the title. The successes clearly surpassed the failures.

Overall, any recipient would be delighted to receive one of these dishes as a gesture of affection. The meals were both thoughtful and skillfully crafted.

The two dishes at the bottom of the rankings exhibited notable plating errors. Jimmy’s pasta, accompanied by bay scallops and green beans, required a larger bowl and further cooking for the green beans. While the dish was acceptable, it lacked the necessary finesse.

Nick’s fish presentation contained a common mistake frequently observed in culinary competitions on television. He incorrectly plated the crispy skin.

The soggy skin was a particularly significant misstep. Consequently, Nick was eliminated, and as a lawyer, he found himself unable to defend his position in this situation.

Nyesha Arrington in Next Level Chef Season 4 home cook draft episode | FOX

For the final challenge aimed at selecting five home cooks for the Next Level Chef Season 4 draft, the contestants were tasked with creating a dish that exemplified a higher standard. Although the criteria were broad, the judges sought exceptional flavor and execution that could stand up to a professional chef.

Upon reviewing the dishes, any of them could have easily secured a place in the earlier seasons. However, the expectations have risen. The sauce must be flawless, and the composition of the plate must be precise.

Regrettably, the bottom two dishes were prepared by Kathy and Jimmy. Kathy’s dish faltered primarily due to her sauce, which would have been better omitted entirely.

Jimmy faced challenges once more. While he may excel in a Navy aircraft, he encountered turbulence in each cooking round. The lumpy, undercooked potatoes were a significant flaw.

Due to his repeated mistakes throughout the challenges, Jimmy was eliminated, marking the end of his journey.

Overall, the home cooks outperformed the social media chefs. Could this be the season in which a home cook claims the title? If Richard Blais can ascend from the lowest ranks, anything is possible in Next Level Chef.

Next Level Chef Season 4 airs on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Hulu.

Gordon Ramsay: The Culinary Titan Behind Next Level Chef

Gordon Ramsay is one of the most influential and recognizable figures in the culinary world. As a world-renowned chef, restaurateur, television personality, and entrepreneur, Ramsay has built an empire that extends far beyond the kitchen. Gordon Ramsay is one of the most influential and recognizable figures in the culinary world. As a world-renowned chef, restaurateur, television personality, and entrepreneur, Ramsay has built an empire that extends far beyond the kitchen. His role as a judge on Next Level Chef is just one of many achievements in a career that has spanned decades, filled with Michelin stars, television success, and a global restaurant empire.

Early Life and Culinary Beginnings

Gordon James Ramsay was born on November 8, 1966, in Johnstone, Scotland, and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. His early years were marked by hardship, as his family moved frequently due to his father’s struggles with alcoholism and instability. Originally, Ramsay dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player and played for the Glasgow Rangers youth team. However, a severe knee injury ended his soccer aspirations, forcing him to reevaluate his future.

Turning to his second passion, cooking, Ramsay enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College to study hotel management. He quickly proved to be a natural in the kitchen, gaining hands-on experience at prestigious restaurants. He trained under some of the most esteemed chefs of his time, including Marco Pierre White, Albert Roux, and Joël Robuchon, refining his skills in French cuisine and developing the discipline and drive that would later define his career.

Rise to Culinary Stardom

In 1993, Ramsay became head chef of the newly opened Aubergine restaurant in London. Under his leadership, the restaurant earned two Michelin stars within three years, solidifying his reputation as a rising star in the culinary world. By 1998, he ventured out on his own, opening Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, London. The restaurant quickly became one of the most esteemed dining establishments in the UK, earning the prestigious three Michelin stars—an honor it still holds today.

Ramsay’s culinary empire rapidly expanded, with restaurants opening in locations such as France, the United States, Singapore, Dubai, and Las Vegas. His establishments range from fine dining to casual eateries, each showcasing his signature bold flavors, exceptional presentation, and commitment to quality ingredients.

Television Career and Global Fame

While Ramsay was already a respected chef, it was his television career that catapulted him to worldwide fame. Known for his fiery temper, blunt critiques, and high expectations, he became a household name through a series of successful television shows, including:

  • Hell’s Kitchen (2004–present): A high-intensity cooking competition where aspiring chefs battle it out in a restaurant-style setting under Ramsay’s often brutal, yet motivating, mentorship.
  • Kitchen Nightmares (2004–2014, 2023–present): In this reality series, Ramsay visits struggling restaurants, diagnosing their problems and attempting to turn them around.
  • MasterChef & MasterChef Junior (2010–present): As a judge on these cooking competitions, Ramsay showcases his softer side while mentoring home cooks and young aspiring chefs.
  • Hotel Hell (2012–2016): Ramsay expands his expertise beyond the kitchen, helping struggling hotels improve their management and guest experiences.
  • Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted (2019–present): A National Geographic series where Ramsay travels the world, immersing himself in different cultures and their culinary traditions.

Each of these shows has played a significant role in shaping modern reality cooking television, inspiring a new generation of chefs and food enthusiasts.

Next Level Chef: Pushing Boundaries in Cooking Competitions

In 2022, Ramsay introduced Next Level Chef, a unique cooking competition designed to test chefs at different stages of their careers. The show features three distinct kitchen levels—an extravagant high-tech kitchen, a standard professional kitchen, and a bare-bones basement kitchen. Contestants, ranging from home cooks to professional chefs, must adapt to these varying environments while creating top-tier dishes.

Ramsay, along with fellow judges Richard Blais and Nyesha Arrington, provides mentorship and critiques throughout the competition. The format pushes chefs to think creatively, work under pressure, and prove they can excel regardless of their resources. Next Level Chef has been praised for its fresh approach to culinary competitions, and its success led to multiple seasons.

Business Ventures and Philanthropy

Beyond restaurants and television, Ramsay is a savvy businessman with numerous ventures:

  • Cookbooks: He has authored multiple best-selling cookbooks, including Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Cookery Course and Gordon Ramsay Quick and Delicious, which bring his expertise into home kitchens.
  • Gordon Ramsay Academy: In 2021, he launched a culinary academy in the UK to train aspiring chefs and home cooks.
  • Online Presence: With millions of followers across social media platforms, Ramsay engages with fans through cooking tutorials, humor, and challenges. His TikTok videos, where he critiques amateur chefs’ dishes, have gained viral popularity.
  • Food and Beverage Lines: He has launched products such as Gordon Ramsay-branded wines, cookware, and ready-to-eat meal kits.

Ramsay also dedicates time to philanthropic efforts. Through the Gordon and Tana Ramsay Foundation, he supports causes related to children’s health, education, and hunger relief. He is actively involved with organizations like Great Ormond Street Hospital and Action Against Hunger.

Personal Life and Legacy

Despite his tough exterior on television, Ramsay is known to be a devoted family man. He has been married to Tana Ramsay since 1996, and the couple has six children. His eldest daughter, Tilly Ramsay, has followed in his footsteps with a growing presence in the culinary and entertainment world.

Ramsay’s impact on the culinary industry is undeniable. With an impressive tally of 17 Michelin stars earned throughout his career, an extensive global restaurant empire, and a television presence that has influenced pop culture, he has set a standard of excellence in the food world. His relentless pursuit of perfection, coupled with his ability to mentor and inspire, ensures that his legacy will continue for generations to come.

Whether he’s mentoring contestants on Next Level Chef, transforming struggling restaurants on Kitchen Nightmares, or pushing the boundaries of fine dining, Gordon Ramsay remains a dominant force in the culinary world. His passion, expertise, and unyielding drive to elevate the industry have solidified his status as one of the greatest chefs of all time.

Next Level Chef Season 3 premiered on Fox on February 13.

The Judges / Mentors

Instagram: @gordongram

Gordon Ramsay, who also serves as Next Level Chef‘s executive producer, returns as one of the high-profile judge and mentor for the new batch of chefs in Season 4.

Aside from being considered as the most influential chef of all time, Ramsay’s brutally honest remarks combined with excellent advice on top of his track record makes him one of the coveted mentors in the reality competition.

After dealing with some controversy in Next Level Chef Season 3, Ramsay has set its sights in improving the challenges while helping each chef to become the best as they conquer unique situations that would make them better inside the kitchen.

In an unexpected twist, Ramsay revealed in the first look promo for Season 4 that him and the two other mentors will also be part of the action in the kitchen for the first time, helping their team gain some advantage over the others.

Ramsay has a warning to mentors Richard Blais and Nyesha Arrington ahead of Season 4, “Give me your best shot and take me down.”

Instagram: @richardblais

After making an impact as a mentor in Next Level Chef Season 3, Richard Blais wants a shot at redemption over Gordon Ramsay by having his mentee win it all in the new season.

In the same promo, Blais, who is the winner of the inaugural Top Chef All-Stars and a James Beard nominated cookbook author, says that “it is imperative” that Ramsay doesn’t win for two straight years, and he will do everything to defeat him and his chosen chef.

Speaking with Gold Derby, Blais has offered high praise toward the social media chefs of Season 4, noting that they are “really good at articulating” due to being used to connect with their audiences:

“Our social media chefs are really good at articulating because they’re talking to their communities and their audiences. They’re usually pretty good at presentation because they have to make a dish that looks good on screen. Sometimes, they’re not that great with timing because they’re used to setting up their ring lights and spending six hours making a dish.”

Instagram: @nyeshajoyce

Rounding out the mentor list of Next Level Chef Season 4 is former Top Chef: Texas Season 9 contestant Nyesha Arrington.

After winning the inaugural Next Level Chef season with her mentee Pyet Despain, Arrington hopes to win it all again in the 2025 edition of the competition.

In the same interview with Gold Derby, the Next Level Chef mentor said that she is excited about the new batch of talent in Season 4, teasing that they have “some absolute heavy-hitters:”

“I’m most excited about this new batch of talent. We have some absolute heavy-hitters — some of the brightest social media stars and some of the best chefs in the game. A really exciting element of surprise is that your esteemed judge panel is going to be putting on an apron in an episode and cooking alongside our team.”

How It All Went Down

In The Basement

In this episode, eight social media chefs will begin their journey cooking in the basement level. Each round, one will be eliminated until only five remain. Those final five will move on to the draft, where Gordon, Nyesha, and Richard will select their teams for the season. The bottom level of this three-tier kitchen is less than ideal, with the poorest-quality cooking supplies and utensils. Gordon coaches the eight competitors in this round. He challenges the social media chefs to “get creative with leftovers” and create a “perfect midnight meal.” They have just 20 minutes. After the platform descends with various ingredients to choose from, the chefs have just 30 seconds to grab what they need for a delicious dish.

Top Dishes: Jeff (crispy fish nachos), Bobby (turkey neck fritters with a poached egg), and Becca (deconstructed ham pie)

Worst Dish: Ilena’s salmon arancini

The Middle Level

In this round, the social media chefs have 20 minutes to create an “eye-catching viral dish” with Richard coaching them through it. The middle level consists of a beautiful kitchen that has all of the typical supplies a great chef would have in their home. During the hectic grab for ingredients, Bobby dropped about 75 percent of his down the chute and he was left with almost nothing but a chicken tender.

Top Dishes: Meg (haddock with curry coconut sauce) and Bobby (chicken tender schnitzel)

Worst Dish: Jake’s Mediterranean ground lamb rice with eggplant

The Top Level

For their final challenge, the social media chefs must prove they belong in the competition by creating a Next Level dish. This round will be coached by Nyesha. Things become so intense at the platform, Keith pulls a muscle grabbing for ingredients. He declines a medic and decides to cook through the pain.

Top Dish: Becca (hoisin-glazed scallop with mushrooms and roasted asparagus)

Worst Dish: Keith (New York strip with mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus)

The WINNERS

Bobby cooked a top dish in each level of the kitchen despite dropping the majority of his ingredients in Round 2. Gordon commented that the Florida chef “shined in the basement, big time.” Other contestants to advance to the Season 4 draft are Becca, Meg, Jeff, and Mistie.

The LOSERS

Three social media chefs failed to make the cut in this week’s episode. Ilena was eliminated in the first round despite hosting a social media cooking series about cooking with leftovers. Jake, a former child star who played Adam Sandler‘s son in Grown Ups, didn’t rise to the occassion on the Middle Level. Keith, a food truck operator from California, was the final chef eliminated.

Next Week:

Eight home cooks head to the elevator and begin their fight for a spot in the Next Level Chef draft. Three will be eliminated and five will move on to compete for the $250,000 prize.

Next Level Chef airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.

“Next Level Chef” stands out as a revolutionary cooking competition show that blends creativity, skill, and mentorship with an innovative twist. Created by the legendary chef and TV personality Gordon Ramsay, the show premiered on January 2, 2022, on FOX and quickly became a sensation due to its unique format, dramatic challenges, and the dynamic interplay between contestants and mentors.

The Vision Behind the Show

Gordon Ramsay conceptualized “Next Level Chef” to elevate the traditional cooking competition format. Ramsay’s extensive experience in high-pressure kitchens and his ability to push chefs to their limits inspired the show’s groundbreaking design. By creating a multi-level kitchen environment, he aimed to test contestants’ adaptability, creativity, and ability to thrive under extreme conditions. The show’s premise reflects Ramsay’s philosophy that great chefs aren’t defined solely by skill but also by their ability to overcome challenges and make the best out of limited resources.

The Three-Story Kitchen

The most defining aspect of “Next Level Chef” is its three-story kitchen set, designed to mimic the varied conditions chefs face in real-world cooking scenarios. Each level represents a different tier of resources and equipment:

  1. Top-Level Kitchen:

    • A culinary paradise equipped with cutting-edge appliances, luxury tools, and high-quality ingredients.
    • Contestants who cook on this level enjoy an undeniable advantage, with every resource at their disposal to create exceptional dishes.

  2. Middle-Level Kitchen:

    • A standard, practical kitchen that reflects an average home or professional workspace.
    • Chefs in this space must rely on solid skills and techniques without the benefit of luxury items.

  3. Basement Kitchen:

    • A barebones setup with outdated, unreliable equipment and a scarcity of ingredients.
    • This level serves as the ultimate test of resourcefulness and creativity, forcing contestants to transform meager resources into culinary masterpieces.

The Role of the Ingredient Platform

The ingredient platform is central to the competition’s drama and strategy. The platform starts on the top floor, delivering a selection of ingredients for contestants to choose from. As it descends to each lower level, the remaining contestants must work with whatever is left.

  • This mechanism introduces a strategic element to the competition:
    • Chefs on the top level have the first pick but must choose quickly under time pressure.
    • Those on the middle and basement levels often face the challenge of turning limited or mismatched ingredients into cohesive dishes.
  • The platform also reinforces the importance of adaptability, as contestants must create outstanding dishes regardless of their circumstances.

Mentorship and Team Dynamics

A unique aspect of “Next Level Chef” is its mentorship model. The contestants are divided into teams, each led by a world-class chef mentor:

  1. Gordon Ramsay:

    • The show’s creator and headliner, known for his high standards and fiery demeanor.
    • Ramsay provides tough love and unparalleled expertise, pushing his team members to reach their full potential.

  2. Nyesha Arrington:

    • A rising culinary star and former “Top Chef” contestant.
    • Known for her warm and encouraging style, Nyesha helps her team develop creative strategies and master complex techniques.

  3. Richard Blais:

    • A “Top Chef: All-Stars” winner and culinary innovator.
    • Blais brings a quirky, experimental approach to the competition, inspiring his team to take bold risks and think outside the box.

The mentors not only guide their teams but also compete against one another, adding an extra layer of intensity and rivalry to the show.

Contestant Selection and Diversity

“Next Level Chef” prides itself on showcasing a diverse group of contestants from various culinary backgrounds:

  • Professional chefs: Experts with years of experience in fine dining or restaurant kitchens.
  • Home cooks: Talented individuals who bring passion and creativity honed in their personal kitchens.
  • Social media influencers: Creators known for viral food content and modern culinary trends.

This eclectic mix ensures dynamic competition and highlights the universal love of food, showing that talent can come from anywhere.

‘Next Level Chef’ Judge Richard Blais

'Next Level Chef' judge Richard Blais

Richard Blais has built a multi-faceted career that reflects his inventive spirit and deep love for the culinary arts. Known for his use of molecular gastronomy—a branch of food science that explores innovative ways to transform ingredients through physical and chemical processes—Blais has introduced his audiences to an entirely new perspective on cooking. From revolutionizing fine dining with imaginative flavors to breaking down the boundaries between classic and modern techniques, Blais’s work has left an indelible mark on the food industry.

Culinary Journey and Influence of Molecular Gastronomy

Molecular gastronomy, which Blais first encountered during his early career, set the stage for his unique approach to food. Inspired by the groundbreaking techniques of chefs like Ferran Adrià, Blais embraced a culinary style that used science as a key ingredient. For him, the kitchen became a laboratory where he could experiment with textures, temperatures, and flavors in unexpected ways. This approach has led him to develop signature dishes like liquid nitrogen-chilled foie gras and smoked mayonnaise, which push the boundaries of traditional culinary techniques.

Blais’s inventive cooking style was influenced by a desire to not only create food but to craft an experience for diners. His food is often playful and surprising, transforming familiar dishes into something entirely new. This focus on “culinary storytelling” is a signature aspect of his cooking and has been an underlying theme throughout his career. Whether using liquid nitrogen to create unexpected textures or employing sous vide cooking to achieve precise flavors, Blais has brought modernist techniques into the mainstream in ways that have inspired chefs across the industry.

Top Chef: The Catalyst for Stardom

Richard Blais’s first major break came in 2008 when he appeared on Bravo’s Top Chef as a contestant in the show’s fourth season. His blend of technical skill and quirky personality made him an immediate standout, and he quickly became known for pushing culinary boundaries. Blais ultimately finished as a runner-up, but his performance left a lasting impression on both viewers and culinary critics.

When Blais returned to the Top Chef kitchen for Top Chef: All-Stars in 2011, he came prepared with refined skills and a deeper understanding of his own style. This time, he took home the title, further establishing himself as a household name. The exposure provided by Top Chef not only propelled his career but also popularized the concept of molecular gastronomy among mainstream audiences. Through his time on the show, Blais demonstrated that science-based cooking techniques could be accessible and fun, inspiring countless aspiring chefs.

Restaurant Success: Juniper & Ivy and Crack Shack

Blais’s inventive cooking didn’t stop at television; he went on to found several critically acclaimed restaurants that reflect his distinct style. In 2013, he opened Juniper & Ivy in San Diego, a sophisticated yet approachable venue where he could experiment with his love for seasonal ingredients and cutting-edge techniques. The restaurant’s menu is known for its bold flavors, such as charred octopus with smoked bacon, and dishes that reimagine classic American fare. Juniper & Ivy quickly became one of San Diego’s most popular fine-dining destinations, often celebrated for its modern take on West Coast cuisine.

Building on this success, Blais launched Crack Shack, a fast-casual concept centered around chicken and egg-based dishes. Crack Shack has grown into a multi-location venture that combines gourmet flavors with a casual, family-friendly setting. From crispy fried chicken sandwiches to inventive egg dishes, Crack Shack brings high-quality ingredients to comfort food, proving that Blais’s culinary creativity has no boundaries. The restaurant’s fun, playful atmosphere aligns with Blais’s philosophy of food as an experience, and the chain has become a favorite among food lovers of all ages.

Books and Media: Sharing His Passion for Innovation

In addition to his work as a chef and restaurateur, Richard Blais has shared his expertise through cookbooks and media appearances. His first cookbook, Try This at Home: Recipes from My Head to Your Plate (2013), offers readers a glimpse into his creative process. With a focus on innovative techniques that can be adapted for home kitchens, the book encourages readers to experiment with flavor and technique, embodying Blais’s belief that cooking should be both challenging and enjoyable.

His second book, So Good: 100 Recipes from My Kitchen to Yours (2017), takes a similar approach, inviting readers to expand their culinary repertoire with more advanced techniques while also emphasizing the importance of simplicity. Both books reflect Blais’s commitment to making sophisticated cooking techniques approachable for home chefs, empowering readers to step out of their comfort zones and create restaurant-quality dishes at home.

In addition to his cookbooks, Blais has become a familiar face on television beyond Top Chef, appearing on shows like Guy’s Grocery Games, Iron Chef America, and Chopped All-Stars. His charismatic and curious personality has made him a popular television presence, while his technical expertise keeps audiences engaged.

Next Level Chef: Mentorship in Action

In 2022, Blais joined Next Level Chef, a cooking competition hosted by Gordon Ramsay that challenges chefs to adapt to different kitchen environments, from high-end professional setups to more basic conditions. The show is unique for its three-tiered kitchen design, which presents contestants with varying levels of difficulty and requires them to think on their feet. As a judge, Blais’s role goes beyond merely critiquing dishes; he provides mentorship and guidance, offering advice on technique, flavor balance, and presentation.

With his expertise in molecular gastronomy and his experience as a restaurateur, Blais encourages contestants to push their creative boundaries while staying grounded in strong culinary fundamentals. His presence on Next Level Chef has added a new level of creativity to the competition, as he inspires contestants to incorporate modern techniques and innovative ideas into their dishes. Blais’s constructive critiques and supportive mentorship make him a beloved judge, and his involvement has helped elevate the show’s reputation as a platform for discovering emerging talent.

Personal Life and Enduring Influence

When not in the kitchen, Blais is known for his love of endurance sports, including running marathons and competing in triathlons. This passion for fitness and discipline reflects his commitment to maintaining a balanced lifestyle, which he believes is essential for his demanding career. He and his wife, Jazmin, reside in California with their two daughters, and Blais often speaks about the importance of family and work-life balance.

Blais’s influence on the culinary world is profound, as he has redefined what it means to be a modern chef. He combines artistry with science, allowing diners to experience food in new and unexpected ways. His restaurants continue to thrive, offering diners a taste of his inventive approach to American cuisine, while his television appearances and cookbooks inspire a generation of chefs to embrace innovation and creativity.

Through his work as a chef, author, and mentor, Richard Blais has left a lasting legacy that challenges conventional ideas about cooking, proving that food can be both intellectually stimulating and comforting. His adventurous spirit and commitment to pushing culinary boundaries continue to resonate with aspiring chefs, making him a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern cuisine.
